It’s a good question, especially if one takes into account the world view of our ruling class, the Epstein Party, That has a very different view of America than many of us do. Elites have a mania for control. Their Will to Power guides them in all things. Your observer has tried to explain the forms that takes in the post-modern era in terms of a certain mode of cognition endemic in our time and condition. Allow me to explain.
I’ve spent a lot of space trying to explain Iain McGilchrist’s hemisphere theory of cognition. His books, The Master and his Emissary and his two-volume magnum opus The Matter with Things provide a vast amount of evidence to support his thesis that the brain hemispheres “see” and “process” the world in two apparently opposing ways. Yet the oppositions are complementary, not mutually exclusive. Both are valid. Both are true. Yet if we use our cognitive powers effectively, the Right Hemisphere (RH) is the “master” and the Left Hemisphere (LH) the “emissary.” One is truer than the other. The brain evolved in such a manner to maximize the benefits of both: The LH was focused on a bracketed bit of reality, searching, say, for signs of food, and eventually became the narrowly mechanistic “take” on reality. It was reductionist, breaking down “things” into component parts that it can use, control, and manipulate — problems it can “solve.” But survival — and most of all, understanding — is contingent on the LH’s focusing on a bit of reality, then shifting that to the RH to integrate into a larger view, fitting together the pieces like a mosaic that yields a broader picture of what is and what could be. Initially the RH was the watchtower, looking for anomalies on the horizon that might be dangerous or beneficial. The LH’s view lacks context, while the RH’s holistic take is intuitive, based on experience and the “big picture,” something the LH cannot assimilate.
Humanity has gone through several periods, McGilchrist explains, in which one view dominated the other, but the scientific and industrial revolutions and the Enlightenment, all of them mutually reinforcing, made materialist scientific reductionism the basis of our common worldview. Epigenetics might have played a role in embedding that utilitarian view into our collective psyche. Anything that could not be explained exclusively on those terms, boiled down to a cost benefit analysis expressed in numbers — natural patriotism, the love of a mother for child, personal attachments like filial piety and friendship, or art, music, poetry, dance and even that inexplicable “joy” yours truly wrote about recently — was merely tolerated, but not celebrated in it own right, as the LH has no sense of value, the basis for morality and that inexpressible, in conventional language or scientific jargon at any rate, quality, joy. It cannot understand what can’t be explained in words or reduced to survival benefit. And it hates being resisted. It doesn’t see beauty or understand it as a value in itself. Love, for instance, is merely a hormonal response to mating rituals. Ideology and fanaticism find a home in the LH, as does the Will to Power. Human beings are “meat computers” that might need “reprogramming.” In short, everything outside of its bounds, which includes most of what makes us fully human and capable of joy, is dispensable.
This straightjacketed way of looking at the world — everything is merely binary code, bar-coded commodities, or a series of carefully-curated algorithms — is how the techno-totalitarian elite, a particularly powerful element in the Trump wing of the Epstein Party, view the world.
Here’s what I’m driving at: In my previous piece, for instance, I noted that popular resistance to the administration’s highly dubious plan, as critics put it, to “bulldoze” some of the scenic wonders of my home state as part of border control project, is a political dog and pony show that would do little to alleviate illegal immigration. But it does mean big money for contractors and might lend some sense of “doing something” to bureaucrats and, as they say, “low information voters.” Do not resist. We are in control. All is well. The argument against the project in Big Bend National Park that is based on preserving the wilderness and its ineffable aesthetic value and spiritual joy — the majesty of a star-filled sky, the terrible beauty of the desert, and intimidating, awe-inspiring high canyon walls — falls on deaf ears. As do the arguments against data centers chewing up American rural landscapes. Or against flock cameras: Privacy?! We don’t need no stinkin’ privacy! You got something to hide? The aim is control, manipulation, and power, based on a conviction that everything can be, must be, controlled. It’s for your own good! You’ll own nothing and be happy! It springs from an unchecked elitist LH mindset, especially among the tech oligarchs who dream of total control, even of transforming humanity into micro-chipped cyborgs. It’s the mentality that allows AI geeks to literally consume books, downloading content for AI manipulation, converting knowledge and even beauty and poetry into “data” to be mined, then destroying the books themselves.
And America? She is not, to them, our homeland. She is a base of operations, a store of resources to be exploited, her people mere economic inputs and outputs. Post-modern trans-national capitalism has reached its logical conclusions in Peter Theil’s “anarcho-libertarian” vision of a “network city” and a privatized “network state.” You see, it’s not efficient to put love of place, loyalty to friends and family, or ethical considerations over the supposedly smooth operation of a vast machine whose operators manipulate the levers of power from on high. It’s a strange efficiency that does not recognize its own mania for control — or to reward its ideological adherents at our expense. The Trump administration, it seems, will allow cut rate and possibly unhealthy Argentine beef onto American markets to the detriment of American ranchers. President Javier Milei, close to Peter Theil, and an ardent Zionist, is one of them. They have bailed him out before. It’s all part of the plan for a Techno-Zionist empire. It seems so clear to them. Hubris intoxicates.
And on and on it goes. The Trump Administration’s Bureau of Land Management is rounding up wild horses in the American West — for butchering. Animals who have value in themselves, they are one of the last vestiges of our storied past. But everything wild and uncontrolled must be tamed. The bureau justifies this slaughter by claiming it saves $56 million, even as the government has accumulated a catastrophic $40 trillion deficit. Meanwhile, the astronomically expensive Iran war continues, and the Pentagon’s budget is in the stratosphere. Trump boasts budget savings while spending like there is no tomorrow — and there won’t be if this goes on much longer.
Checks on monopolies and environmental restrictions are also deemed inefficient, a challenge to the total control of a produce and consume mentality. “Our” government backed Monsanto claims that glyphosate is supposedly safe, a claim meant to limit the company’s liability in lawsuits over cancer. Now that chemical is used to douse forests in California, killing shrubs, wildflowers, and animals, and polluting rivers and streams, to clear land and boost production of profitable pines for lumber companies. The forest is not part of our common heritage, a source of joy and inspiration — “America the Beautiful” — with value of its own, but merely another input in the machinery. Glyphosate is in Monsanto’s weed killer Roundup, and the parent company, Bayer, has already paid billions to those exposed to the carcinogenic substance.
If you are wary of lab-produced meat, get ready for lab-produced egg whites. Lab produced “food” fits in neatly with a program aimed at a high-tech engineered society, removed entirely from nature and subject to the economic interests of monopolists. And those economic interests are also closely related to the attempts to consolidate a surveillance state. Total control is the goal. We don’t trust them — and they don’t trust us.
So, what is “America”? Simply a vast store of resources to be exploited and exhausted for the economic benefit of oligarchs, a base for the Techno-Zionist empire, or is she our homeland? Is there anything of value that doesn’t have a price tag on it? The fact that the pseudo-right in this country has no real answers to those questions only underscores the pathetic state of political, social, economic, and moral discourse in what’s left of our country.
