In another apparent victory for Iran, the United States has withdrawn its squadron of B-1 bombers from England.
The move to abandon the Royal Air Force base at Fairford came after British authorities foiled what might have been a terror plot targeting the base.
The withdrawal also followed last week’s final movement of U.S. forces out of Iraq.
As The New York Times reported last week, British cops arrested five men after three suspicious vehicles were spotted near the base. All “the men were all in their early 20s and were British nationals from London,” the Times reported:
The United States has used the base, R.A.F. Fairford, to deploy bombers against Iran during its war, but it is not yet clear whether the episode is connected to that conflict. On Monday, Iran’s embassy in London said it “categorically rejects and strongly condemns” speculation that Iran was connected to what had happened.
After police received a call, “authorities arrested five men on suspicion of ‘committing offenses under the Explosives Act’ and of ‘preparation of a terrorist act,’” the Times reported, citing police.
The base features a nearly 10,000-foot runway that can handle heavy bombers like the B-1 Lancer. The U.S. has used it since it opened in January 1944.
Cops found gasoline but no bombs in the trucks, and a dual British-Iranian national arrested by police was released on bail.
During the weekend, the Times reported separately, the Lancers flew back to the United States “after commanders received new threats about an Iran-backed plot against the installation, two U.S. officials said on Sunday.”
