Their War and Ours — Why Iran Wants Nukes (And Why We Must Not go to War with Iran)

Israel launches strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities and more top ...

Israel’s strike on Iran yesterday was, we are told, a pre-emptive strike to prevent the Iranians from enriching uranium and possibly producing nuclear bombs. The U.S. knew about it beforehand but distanced itself from the strike. Israeli’s backers are wondering whether the US will defend the Israelis from retaliation. Whether the Iranians are close to producing nukes is debatable. In any case, this is not our war. Our war is here —  at home.

America has no real stake in what happens in the region. The Cold War is over, if anyone hasn’t heard. We are not dependent on the region for energy. What remains is the power of The Israel Lobby and its hold on our political system. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been lobbying for a U.S. war with Iran since the time of the Iraq war, claiming that removing Saddam, for instance, would make the Middle East more stable. Yet that war precipitated a wave of instability and bloodletting that has not let up since. And thousands of American troops are still in the region for reasons that have nothing to do with us.

Allow me to offer an alternative view of what Netanyahu might be up to. The strikes might be intended to provoke an Iranian response that will draw the U.S. into a war with Iran and yet another “regime change” operation. Saddam is gone. Assad is out in Syria. Next Israeli target: Iran. Then the Israelis can finish the job by ethnically cleansing the rest of the Palestinians from Gaza. Signing more Arab states up to the Abraham Accords would make such a plan more viable. This is what the Netanyahu government appears to believe. What the Israelis do or don’t do is not our affair. But we must not subsidize their wars and risk any American lives for Greater Israel.

Why might Tehran want a nuclear weapon? To prevent a regime-change war. We have heard a lot of hype about the dangers of the Islamic world acquiring nukes, but Pakistan, where Osama bin Laden hid out, already has an “Islamic bomb.” And for some reason, nobody is calling for airstrikes against that country. The aim of the Israeli Lobby is to preserve Israel’s monopoly on nuclear weapons in the region and to overthrow the regime in Tehran so Netanyahu can carry out the rest of his plan. The more likely result of an all-out war with Iran would be more chaos, more killing, and deeper US involvement in the Middle East, which would serve the war party’s interests here and in Israel. The Deep State would get a real shot in the arm.

Our war is not in the Middle East. It’s not with Russia. We can handle the Chinese without World War III. The real existential threat to America is here in our own country. Fighting everybody else’s wars weakens our ability to fight the battles at home we must win. If we don’t get on with it, then Trump 2.0 may prove to be a temporary respite before the Blob continues its drive to finish us.

  • I hope that you are currently working on a longer piece for Chronicles arguing against this war. Their avoidance of this critical issue right now is inexcusable. I know it’s controversial. The purpose of the magazine is to take up those kinds of issues.
